Salary packaging calculator

Salary Packaging Calculator & Example Payslip Australia

Fill in your pay cycle, your rate excluding super, and the hours or days you expect to work. We build two example payslips from those numbers: one where you pay for everything yourself after tax, and one where the eligible items come out before tax. Same spending, different take-home pay.

1

It comes out first

Eligible costs are taken from your pay before tax is worked out.

2

You are taxed on less

Your taxable pay drops, so the ATO tax tables withhold less.

3

It costs you less

You spend the same money, but keep more of your pay each cycle.

Superannuation for the year

Employer super plus your sacrifice adds up to $31,200 across 52 pays. The concessional cap for 2026-27 is $32,500.

You have $1,300 of cap space left this year.

Estimates use the ATO PAYG withholding tax tables for 2026-27 (NAT 1005, 1006 and 1007) and superannuation at 12% of the gross wage shown in this example. Figures are a guide only, ignore Medicare levy variations, tax offsets and FBT outcomes, and are not financial advice.

How the PayMe salary packaging calculator works

This calculator builds two example payslips from the same contract rate and the same spending: a standard payslip where you pay for everything from your net pay, and a salary packaged payslip where eligible items are deducted before tax is calculated. Putting them side by side makes the difference easy to see.

Enter your pay cycle, your rate excluding super, and the hours or days you expect to work. Then add the amounts you want to test — additional salary sacrificed superannuation, eligible work-related expenses, and the pre-tax and post-tax (ECM) portions of a novated lease. Tax settings for the tax-free threshold and a HELP/STSL debt can be switched on or off.

The comparison shows how eligible pre-tax deductions can affect your taxable income, the PAYG withholding calculated on it, your estimated take-home pay, your additional super contributions, novated lease deductions and eligible work-related expenses. Withholding is estimated using the ATO PAYG withholding tables for the selected pay cycle.

The calculator provides an estimate only. It is not financial or tax advice, and it does not confirm that a particular item can be packaged. Eligibility, contribution caps and your own circumstances all matter, so use the figures as a guide and talk to us about what applies to your placement.

Salary Packaging Calculator FAQs

What is a salary packaging calculator?

It is a tool that estimates how paying for eligible expenses from your pre-tax income may affect your taxable pay and the amount that reaches your bank account, compared with paying for the same items after tax.

How can salary packaging affect my take-home pay?

Eligible pre-tax deductions may reduce your taxable income, which can change the PAYG withholding calculated on that pay. Because you are also paying for the item, the net effect varies with your income, the amounts packaged and your circumstances, so no particular outcome is guaranteed.

What does the PayMe example payslip calculator show?

It can display gross pay, pre-tax deductions, the pay you are taxed on, estimated PAYG withholding, post-tax deductions, the estimated payment to your bank account and employer superannuation — for both the standard and the salary packaged payslip.

Does the calculator include PAYG withholding?

Yes. It provides an estimated PAYG withholding amount for each payslip based on the information entered, using the ATO withholding tables for the pay cycle you select.

Can I calculate salary sacrifice to super?

Yes. Enter the additional salary sacrificed super contribution you want to test and the calculator shows its estimated impact on your taxable pay and withholding. Concessional contribution caps and your individual eligibility should be considered separately.

Can I include a novated lease?

Yes. You can enter the relevant pre-tax and post-tax novated lease deductions from your lease quote. Novated leasing is available fee-free through our sister company Alliance Leasing, and their calculator can give you the figures to enter here.

What is the difference between pre-tax and post-tax novated lease deductions?

Pre-tax deductions come out of your pay before PAYG withholding is calculated, so they reduce the pay you are taxed on. Post-tax deductions (commonly the employee contribution method, or ECM) are taken after PAYG withholding has been calculated, so they reduce your net pay without changing your taxable income.

Can contractors salary package work-related expenses?

Some eligible work-related expenses may be able to be salary packaged, depending on your circumstances and the applicable tax rules. Not every work expense qualifies automatically — items need to be checked and approved before they can be added to your payroll.

Does salary packaging reduce my gross contract income?

No. Salary packaging changes how eligible amounts are allocated within your pay, not the underlying contract rate you agreed to. The same gross amount is earned; some of it is simply directed to an approved item before tax rather than after.

Why does salary packaging change the PAYG amount on the example payslip?

Because eligible pre-tax deductions can reduce the pay you are taxed on, and PAYG withholding is calculated on that reduced figure. Lower taxable pay generally means a lower withholding amount for that pay.

Does the calculator account for HELP/STSL?

Yes. There is an option to indicate that you have a HELP/STSL debt, and the calculator will estimate the additional withholding on that basis alongside PAYG.
